Maintaining Block Paving

Block paving is by far the most popular material used for driveways across Middlesbrough, Stockton and Yarm. A beautiful new paved driveway really enhances the look and value of your home, however maintaining block paving is something people sometimes overlook.

Due to the porous nature of the material along with the gaps between each block, it’s hard to keep large areas looking good. With time, the elements can cause unprotected paving to become untidy, faded and overgrown. Cars can even drip oil which can create unsightly stains.

If this sounds familiar, and you’re thinking about cleaning or renewing your old block paving driveway, you have come to the right place!

All of these problems could have been prevented or at least postponed if your driveway was sealed correctly. By sealing and protecting the surface you can increase the lifespan of your block paving and minimise future maintenance.

So what can I do with my old driveway to bring it back to life?

Okay, to bring your old driveways to life you’re going to need a few tools.

  • Paving and patio sealant
  • Stiff garden brush
  • Masonry paint brush
  • Long pile roller & extension handle
  • Paint Tray
  • Disposable gloves
  • Patio & Paving Cleaner
  • Fungicidal wash

Before starting this job its best to check the weather to make sure that it’s going to be a clear day. If your in Middlesbrough, Stockton, Yarm or anywhere in the north east – that will be hard to find!

Once you are sure that it’s going to be a nice clear day it’s time to clear your driveway of any plants or furniture that might be in your way.

The first step when maintaining block paving is cleaning is to remove any weeds, grass or moss between the bricks using a hand trowel and / or a pressure wash. Once this has been done you can brush away all debris with a stiff brush.

We recommend spraying your driveways with a fungicidal wash. This will kill any algae or moss lurking on your driveway. Leave the treatment on for the recommended time allocated.

You can now apply a patio cleaner to the surface to remove any ingrained dirt of stains on the paving. Brush vigorously with a stiff brush. Again, leave the cleaner on the paving for the allocated time in the manufactures instructions.

It is important to evenly clean all areas of the paving.

Once this has been done you can finish the cleaning and rinsing with a high pressure water jet.

You must now leave your block paving to dry before you can use your paving seal. Once your paving is dry it is important to brush sand into the cracks and gaps in the paving.

Once this has been done a paving seal must can be applied to protect the block paving from weathering and stains. This product will create a clear membrane that will repel water, dirt, oil and fuel spills. It will give a tough durable finish enhancing and binding the surface and stopping any growth of moss or lychin.

For best results, pour the sealant into a paint tray and apply using a long roller or a masonry paintbrush.
